Community Tours in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda

Community Tours and Village Walks in Queen Elizabeth National Park – Community tours and village walks involve meeting and interacting with local people to learn about their beliefs, customs, and way of life.

These experiences help tourists understand the unique cultures of the communities living around and within Queen Elizabeth National Park. Some of these communities include the Bakonjo, Basongora, and Banyabindi, who strongly value their traditions. Despite some travelers thinking Africa is unsafe, most communities are friendly and welcoming.

Visiting local villages is a rich part of a Ugandan safari. Uganda has about 50 tribes, and since Queen Elizabeth is a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve, some people live within the park. This makes it easier for visitors to explore their lifestyles during safe and guided visits.

One of the key villages is Leopard Village. It got its name because local people have learned to live peacefully with leopards, even though they sometimes attack livestock. Leopard Village is found across from Queen Elizabeth National Park, near Muhokya village, which is located on a 3-acre piece of land.

Leopard Village is run by the local community. They share what they have and support each other. Park officials have helped educate the people here about tourism, and today, the village promotes culture, wildlife conservation, and economic growth.

When you visit, you can take part in activities like farming, livestock care, and buying handmade crafts. You can also have conversations with locals from villages like Muhokya, Kahendero, and Hamukungu.

Another place to visit is the Kikorongo Women’s Community. “Kikorongo” is a word in Rukonjo, meaning “sunshine” in English. The name reflects the hot weather at Kikorongo village, which lies along the equator in the northern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Even though it sometimes gets cold, the women here always welcome guests with energetic cultural performances that bring joy and life to your safari.

The Nyanzibiri Cave Community is another cultural site worth visiting. After a long game drive, this area offers a chance to rest and see the famous cave. From here, you can enjoy beautiful views of volcanic crater lakes.

Other places to explore include the Katwe Tourism Information Center, Kasoga Community, and more.

You will enjoy your community tour and village walk experience when you visit Queen Elizabeth National Park.
