Bird-watching in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda

Planning for birding in Queen Elizabeth National Park? Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of the best places for birdwatching in Uganda. It lies next to Lake George, which is home to over 150 bird species. In 1988, this area was named Uganda’s first Ramsar site because of its rich biodiversity. Some of the birds found here include the African jacana and the rare saddle-billed stork.

As you move toward Lake Edward, which is linked to Lake George by the Kazinga Channel, you can spot lesser flamingos that come from Kenya. These birds later return to their home country. Other birds around the channel include the African fish eagle, African skimmer, and yellow-billed stork.

Birding is also possible around Kyambura Gorge, where you may see species like the African finfoot, blue-headed bee-eater, martial eagle, and white-tailed lark. Many photographers enjoy capturing these birds, but it’s important to make sure your camera does not make flash sounds or show bright lights, as birds are very sensitive.

To increase your chances of seeing many birds, it is best to visit between June and September when there is less rain and plenty of food for the birds. You can also see migratory birds between November and April. The dry months of January and February are good times too.

One special bird to look for is the shoebill. It is tall, reaching up to 1.52 meters, with a wingspan of 7 feet 7 inches to 8 feet 6 inches. It moves very slowly, which surprises many visitors, given its size. Besides Queen Elizabeth National Park, you can also find the shoebill in Mabamba Swamp, on the northern shores of Lake Victoria.

Uganda has made efforts to support bird-watching by creating bird hides, walkways, and trails to improve the experience for tourists.
