Kalinzu Forest in Uganda – Chimp Trekking & Nature Walks

Kalinzu Forest in Uganda - Chimp Trekking & Nature Walks

The protected Kalinzu Forest is a special place for tourism and wildlife. It is home to 414 species of trees, 378 species of birds, 262 types of butterflies, 97 types of moths, reptiles, flowers, and six different species of primates.

These include blue monkeys, vervet monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and chimpanzees. Chimpanzees are a favorite for many tourists. They mainly eat fruits, but also feed on leaves, roots, flowers, and insects.

Chimpanzees are called our cousins because they share about 98% of our DNA. Some scientists believe humans may have come from chimps. At times, they even walk upright like people, which excites visitors. That is why you should not miss visiting Uganda, the Pearl of Africa.

Most visitors to Kalinzu Forest enjoy nature walks. This activity involves walking on foot through the forest, guided by a knowledgeable tour guide. Before you begin, the guide will explain the rules. The walk usually lasts two to three hours, depending on how quickly you spot the chimpanzees.

Treks are done in small groups to avoid disturbing the animals. Not only tourists take part—researchers and conservationists also come here to study wildlife and the forest.

Birdwatching and butterfly spotting are also popular activities. These experiences help calm the mind, but it’s important to stay quiet because birds and butterflies are sensitive to noise.

Kalinzu Forest covers 147 square kilometers and is next to Queen Elizabeth National Park and Maramagambo Forest. It sits at an altitude of about 1,400 meters above sea level. Visitors can camp in the forest, which gives them a chance to be close to nature.

However, you should carry your own tent because the forest station at Nkombe does not provide any. If you prefer to sleep in a lodge, you can find one in Bushenyi town, where you can relax after a long day in the forest.

Road transport is the best way to get to Kalinzu Forest. It is located 375 kilometers from Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. The forest is found in Bushenyi District in western Uganda, an area known for many good travel destinations.
