Nature Walks in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda

Planning for Nature walks in Queen Elizabeth National Park? Take a walk on foot through Queen Elizabeth National Park during nature walks that last about two to three hours. These are done either in the morning or evening and are always guided by a ranger who explains the importance of the park’s plants, insects, small mammals, reptiles, and more.

During your walk, you will follow marked trails. One of the main trails is in Maramagambo Forest, located in the southern part of the park. This forest spreads westward from the Katunguru-Ishaka road to the nearby shores of Lake Edward. Some parts of this forest are closed to tourists for safety reasons, as they are home to aggressive chimpanzees. The park always ensures the safety of its visitors.

Kyambura Gorge is another trail visitors can follow, leading to beautiful sights inside the park. Other trails include those in the Mweya Peninsula and the Ishasha Sector. These systems help park staff monitor tourists who are doing nature walks.

You can also walk around Lake Kyasanduka, where you will enjoy the sounds and sights of many bird species that rest along the forest edge. Some of the birds you may see include the Snowy-Headed Robin-Chat, Scaly-Breasted Illadopsis, and Chestnut Wattle-Eye.

Another trail leads to the Nyamasingiri area, where you can see the famous bat cave. This cave is home to millions of bats and pythons that feed on them. To stay safe, visitors are advised to use the viewing platform built 15 meters away from the cave and to follow all park rules.

If you follow this trail further, you will reach Lake Kimilanjovu. This lake is known as “the lake that swallows elephants” because of an old legend that says hunters once chased an elephant into the lake, and it got stuck and disappeared. The lake has a blue color due to high levels of copper and sits in a smaller crater, making it a great place for photos and videos.

Be sure to pack everything you need for your nature walk, such as bottled water, snacks, hiking boots, and earth-colored clothes.

Nature walks in Queen Elizabeth National Park are enjoyable and worth experiencing.
