Kyambura Game Reserve in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Chimpanzee lovers, welcome to Kyambura Game Reserve, located in the southwestern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park. It covers 156 square kilometers and is well known for its chimpanzees, one of the most visited animals in Uganda. It is usually recommended to visit during the dry season when the ground in Kyambura is easier to access.

However, you can also visit during the wet season. Although it may be muddy, there are some advantages. Prices are usually lower, and fruits are more available, which makes it easier to spot chimpanzees along the trails. In the dry season, you may need to walk longer distances to find them as they move around in search of food. Always make sure to follow the rules and regulations of the reserve to avoid any penalties during your safari.

One of the main activities in Kyambura is chimpanzee trekking, which is done in the morning or afternoon. Those who go in the morning often get the chance to see the chimps as they begin their day. Visitors are advised to keep quiet, as chimpanzees are very sensitive to noise—just like some of the birds you may see along the way.

Trekkers usually head toward the gorge where the chimpanzees feed. This gorge is believed to be about 100 meters deep.

The name “Kyambura” means “got lost.” According to local stories, heavy rains used to flood the area, and sometimes villagers would go missing. Those who searched for them would return saying “Kyambura,” meaning they got lost. This is how the area got its name. In the Runyankole language, it is sometimes pronounced as “Chambura.”
