Queen Elizabeth National Park in May has many water sources, including Lake Edward, Lake George, and several rivers. The days are wet, with frequent and heavy rain. Humidity is high, with warm temperatures during the day, and it becomes cool at night. It is best to use 4×4 vehicles because the roads, especially in remote areas like the Ishasha sector (famous for tree-climbing lions), become muddy and slippery.
The skies are clear and bright, and the park is covered in green vegetation, which is good for photography, especially around the Kazinga Channel. However, it can be harder to see animals because the vegetation is thick.
Also, animals spread out across the park due to the many water sources. You may see spotted hyenas, lions, jackals, and leopards hunting early in the morning before the rain starts. These sightings are less common than during the dry season. Be prepared for a rough and muddy ride while looking for wildlife.
A boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel is a good choice this month because the boats have roofs to protect you from the rain. You may see hippos, crocodiles, and many waterbirds in and around the water.
You might also see buffaloes and elephants gathering near the channel. Although animal sightings are fewer in May, bird-watching is excellent. The park has around 600 bird species. Look out for kingfishers, African finfoot, papyrus gonolek, flamingos, and others. Guided bird-watching walks can help you identify the birds and learn about their behavior and habitats.
On your way to the park, you can stop at the Equator in Kayabwe to take photos or visit the Igongo Cultural Center to learn about the Banyankole culture and see their traditional items.
There are fewer visitors during May, but it is still a good idea to book your accommodation early. Also, carry insect repellent because there is a higher risk of malaria.
Pack warm clothes for the cooler days and nights, strong walking boots, binoculars, sun protection, and a small first aid kit. Prices are usually lower in May because it is the low season, and some lodges and tour companies may offer discounts.
May is a good month for bird lovers and travelers who do not mind some rain.
