Mweya Peninsula is located on the northern bank of the Kazinga Channel, where it connects to Lake Edward. To save on fuel, many visitors are advised to use Katunguru Gate. It is one of the most commonly used entry points to Queen Elizabeth National Park or when heading toward the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the Mountains of the Moon.
Katunguru Gate is in a good location, close to one of the best lodges in the park, Mweya Safari Lodge. This makes it easy for guests to relax after a long day of touring while enjoying the views of Lake Edward and the Kazinga Channel. If you have binoculars, you may spot forest hogs grazing nearby or see crocodiles moving in the water, wondering about the new visitors.
After a good meal, you can go on a game drive to see more animals and meet the local people. Though your visit may be short, it will leave you with lasting memories.
The staff at the lodge can also share the history of Queen Elizabeth National Park, which covers about 1,978 square kilometers.
It is one of Uganda’s most visited parks, established in 1952, along with Murchison Falls National Park. The park spreads across the districts of Kamwenge, Kasese, Rubirizi, and Rukungiri.
The park was first called Kazinga, but after a visit from the Queen of England, it was renamed in her honor to help promote tourism in Uganda. Today, people from all over the world visit to see natural features they may not have in their own countries. These include lakes, valleys, animals, birds, and plants.
You can reach Queen Elizabeth National Park by road or air, depending on your budget. Most international visitors arrive through Entebbe International Airport.
At the airport, your bags will be checked to make sure you are not carrying anything illegal or dangerous. If anything illegal is found, you could be deported or arrested. There are also domestic flights from Entebbe or Kajjansi Airfield to Queen Elizabeth National Park, but be sure to book early to avoid problems.
